As far as the discrete IR codes are concerned, I own a DVDO Edge and many of the codes (Mosquito Noise reduction codes for instance) are the same. Not sure what is going on with your emulator, but they work fine in mine.
As far a serial interface is concerned, if you still own a desktop, buying a serial card is a great alternative and is a lot cheaper than a serial-USB adapter. NewEgg sells them.
