I am using a bunch of Insteon light modules along with their IR-to-Insteon receiver and it has worked very well. The Insteon series are fairly inexpensive and suitable for amateur installation. The proton learns the codes from the ir remote included with the Insteon IR receiver or you can just pick an NEC code set and teach the Insteaon receiver to respond to it.
