Can you elaborate a little on how that would work? If you think it's easier and faster (and hopefully more reliable) than what I'm trying to do, I'll certainly give it a shot.

Specifically, I'm wondering how a widget could get/use feedback from the display faster, when the heart of the issue is that this panel just doesn't seem to offer any direct way to ascertain power status when it's in STANDBY.
