Well, disabling hardware accelleration will indeed make things run slowly, but if your video card can't handle h264 in the first place I guess you need it disabled.
Flash has always been bad at high res video. Before 10.1, I could barely play 1080p through flash with hardware accelleration, and that's with a quad core 2.93ghz. But I generally had to leave accelleration disabled as it didn't work quite right - in full screen the picture would keep freezing. It's better with 10.1, but honestly still not close to as good as with any standalone media player.
