I guess I got a lemon. I talked to Sony's tech support and they gave me an RMA, but I'm thinking I might be better off just returning it and trying to find a 610.

Of course you could always say you are a reviewer with CNET or something.
Then they would actually test it and make sure it is working before they send it to you.
I went ahead and got the 600, which I am sure is a bit bulkier, but at least it will be working.
The 600 is what I ordered from Best Buy, but they switched it with the 620.
I now know why.
I guess they have to unload them fast,
I'll still use the 620 for entering codes only.
