My remote's (Sony RM-U252) volume control died on me and i wanted to know if anyone could please find me the code for my Sony STR-D665 receiver? I looked all over the web and couldn't find squat, but i'm not that great at that sort of thing.

The receiver still works perfect (it's a surround-sound unit) but i guess i need to try to program another remote to adjust the volume now.

Note: Sony doesn't make replacement remotes for it either, it's an old unit.

It seems like you are asking for a code when you haven't even decided on which remote to buy. Any universal remote will have a code for the receiver which will work, but you may not be able to access all of the features that you could with the original remote.

If all you want to do is adjust the volume, do you have a TV remote which allows you to program the receiver to it so you can use it to adjust the volume?

No, you are right, i haven't decided which remote to buy.

Yes, i have an old universal RCA remote. All it has on it is Aux, Cable, VCR and TV. I tried punching in one through 999 to find the code but didn't get the unit to turn on. I figured if it would turn on and i could adjust the volume i'd be set, that's why i need the code.

I saw the remote you posted the link to. It looks very similar to mine.

I read that it is a replacement for the one i have. I like the volume control better. It also costs more (ugh!). The trouble with the remote i have is after using the volume controls they eventually wear out, and i adjust the volume a lot. The rest of the controls i use very, very little. The one you posted the link to has the same volume set-up, so maybe this one would be better or no?

So if & when i buy one how can i get it to work without the code?

Come to think of it, all i really need is a remote to adjust the volume. All the other buttons work well.

The problem is with your RCA remote, which doesn't appear to be able to control a receiver. If all you want to do is control the volume, any current universal remote will be able to do that.

If you are in the US, and think you might want to be able to control more features of your receiver, I recommend getting a OneForAll URC-6820 or URC-8820, which are almost guaranteed to work with your receiver, especially the volume.

If you get this remote you can also access advanced codes, which is a way to access more of the commands you might need to control your receiver. It is not a difficult concept and can easily be explained if you get one of the OFA remotes and decide to take adavantage of this unique feature.

The OneForAll URC-6820 looks good.

Most RCA universal remotes only control RCA AUD devices, where TV's & VCR's are programmable though. I wouldn't say your search was that exhausting.

I haven't seen the 6820 for sale in any stores yet so Amazon might be your best bet. I looked it up in Circuit City and Best Buy and the didn't show it, and I haven't seen it in Walmart either.

I bought one in the Air Force Base Exchange for $16 as a backup for my aging URC-7800, and it is a well set up remote.

Let me know when you get it and I will show you how to use those advanced codes I was talking about, if you think you might be interested.

Hi. I got my remote a few days ago. It works well, does what i needed it to do (volume control). I haven't had time to do much of anything else with it though, except be able to turn on my DVD and TV.

A few notes:

-If anyone else reading this has a few remotes they always need and can't stand it, here is a neat tip: i always Velcro the backs of my remotes together. That way it's easier to access them and harder to lose them.

-Just for the rare chance someone Googled this and needs that hard-to-find code for a Sony STR-D665 receiver, it is 0158.

When you find an advanced code you want, you can save it on your OFA remote by using the following keymover procedures. The only difference in these procedures and the one in the manual is that in the manual you press a key that you want to move, and in this procedure you press the 5 digit advanced code.

Remember, these newer remotes use 5 digit advanced codes, so just add two zeroes before the code given in the listing.

KEYMOVER PROCESS TO ASSIGN ADVANCED/DISCRETE CODE TO A KEY

1. Press and hold “p” or "set" until the led light blinks twice
2. Enter 9-9-4. the led light will blink twice
3. Press the device key
4. Press “p” or "set" once
5. Press the 3 digit discrete code (or the 5 digit advanced code for newer OFA remotes)
6. Press the device button
7. Press the key you want to use, which will then have the discrete code you assigned permanently entered

To delete a keymoved code:

1. Press and hold “p” or "set" until the red light blinks twice
2. Press 9-9-4
3. Press the device key
4. Press key twice
